Strategic Insight & Master Lesson

A prime is a continuous row of closed points (2+ checkers each). A 6-prime (points 4 through 9 closed) is completely impassable because the maximum single die roll is 6.

Grandmaster Takeaway: Trapping an enemy checker behind a 6-prime allows you to roll freely while forcing your opponent to waste moves or crunch their own board.

Grandmaster Key Takeaways

  • A prime is an unbroken series of 2-or-more checker anchors on adjacent points.
  • A 6-prime cannot be jumped by any single die roll (max die value is 6).
  • Trapping enemy checkers behind a prime forces the opponent to advance their own home board into a crunch.
  • Extend your prime forward into your home board to prepare the decisive blitz finish.

Why the Prime is the Deadliest Weapon in Backgammon

In Backgammon, checkers can only leap over points, not land on blocked points. Because dice only go up to 6, a continuous wall of six consecutive made points (e.g. points 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9) forms an absolute physical barrier that no checker can jump.

While your opponent is trapped behind your 6-prime, any turn where they fail to enter or move means their other checkers must march forward, inevitably breaking their own defensive points (crunching).

How to Build a Prime Efficiently

Start with your natural anchors: Point 6 and Point 8 are already established at game start. Making Point 5 or Point 7 instantly builds a 3-prime or 4-prime.

Bring builders down from your midpoint (13-point) into your outer board (points 9, 10, 11) to give yourself multiple rolls that can convert blots into solid points.
