Strategic Insight & Master Lesson
Both players begin with 15 checkers positioned on key anchor points: two on point 24, five on point 13, three on point 8, and five on point 6.
Grandmaster Key Takeaways
- Each player commands 15 checkers moving in opposite directions.
- Points occupied by 2 or more checkers are safe from attack.
- Single checkers (blots) can be hit and sent to the central Bar.
- Checkers on the Bar must re-enter before any other move can be made.
Understanding the 24-Point Board
Backgammon is played on a board with 24 narrow triangles called points. The points alternate in color and are numbered 1 through 24.
The board is split into two halves by a vertical ridge called the Bar. Your home board occupies points 1 through 6, while your opponent’s home board occupies points 19 through 24.
How Checkers Move and Attack
You roll two dice on your turn. You can use one die to move checker A and the other die to move checker B, or use both dice on a single checker.
If you land on a point with exactly one opposing checker, that checker is "hit" and sent to the Bar. The opponent must roll to re-enter from your home board before moving any other pieces.
