A New Summit: Say Hello to Master
For years, the toughest question our players asked was simple: “Is there anything stronger than Expert?” With Ultra we raised the bar. With version 1.9.5 of Clean Backgammon for Android, we are raising it again. Meet Master, the strongest backgammon AI we have ever shipped.
Master is built for players who want a real challenge every single game: club players preparing for a tournament, online regulars who want to sharpen their checker play, and anyone who simply wants to know how good they really are. If you have ever searched for the strongest backgammon app you can play offline, this is the opponent we built for you.
A Neural Network That Learned From Millions of Positions
Master is powered by a neural network. Instead of following a fixed list of hand-written rules, it learned backgammon the way strong players do: by studying an enormous amount of real positions and their outcomes.
We trained it on millions of backgammon positions, each one analysed by a world-class backgammon engine. From that experience, Master learned which plays win most often: when to build a prime, when to hit and when to stay safe, when to run, and when a bold play is worth the risk.
The result is an opponent that feels surprisingly human in its judgement, but never gets tired, never tilts and never gives away a cheap game.
Six Offline Levels, One Clear Ladder
Clean Backgammon now offers six offline levels: Easy, Medium, Hard, Expert, Ultra and Master. Each step is a real step up, so you always have an opponent that matches your current game and one that pushes you further.
Easy and Medium are perfect for learning the rules and building confidence. Hard and Expert punish loose play and teach you solid fundamentals. Ultra, available for free, is a learned AI that knows the classic openings and adapts to your playing style. Master sits at the top of the ladder for those who want the hardest test the app can offer.

How Strong Is Master?
We did not want to just call Master “strong”, so we put it to the test in long series of matches against our own levels and against a world-class analysis engine.
Against Ultra and against Expert, Master wins about 2 out of every 3 games. Against a world-class backgammon analysis engine, the kind of software serious players use to study their games, Master wins about 48 games out of 100. In other words, it plays nearly on par with the reference that strong players trust.
Dice are still dice, and every game of backgammon includes luck. That is exactly why these results matter: over many games, better decisions win, and Master makes them consistently. As always in Clean Backgammon, the AI gets exactly the same fair dice as you. It wins through better play, never through better rolls.
Instant, Light on Battery and Fully Offline
Strength usually comes at a cost: long thinking times, a hot phone or a mandatory internet connection. Master avoids all three.
It thinks instantly, so the game keeps its natural rhythm. It is light on battery, so you can play a long session on the train or before bed without worrying about your charge. And it works fully offline: no account, no server and no internet needed. Play backgammon offline on a plane, in the mountains or anywhere your signal disappears, and still face a world-class opponent.
Openings, the Doubling Cube and a Style That Adapts
Master plays the classic opening moves that experienced players recognise, so the early game feels like a real match from the very first roll.
It also handles the doubling cube. Master knows when a position is strong enough to offer a double, when to accept and when to pass, so cube decisions become a real part of the battle, just like in competitive play.
Finally, Master adapts to your playing style. If you love aggressive blitzes, expect it to be ready. If you prefer slow, positional games, it will make you prove every point you build.
Ultra or Master: Which One Is Right for You?
Ultra is the step right before Master, and it is free for everyone. It is a learned AI that knows the openings and adapts to your style, which makes it an excellent sparring partner for most club-level players.
Master is for when Ultra stops feeling like a challenge. If you are winning regularly against Ultra, or you simply want to measure yourself against the strongest opponent in the app, Master is the next summit to climb.
How to Try Master for Free
Master is included in Clean Backgammon PRO. But you do not have to upgrade to see what it can do.
In the free version, open the level menu, select Master and tap “Preview for 24h”. After a short ad, Master is unlocked for the next 24 hours. Play as many games as you like, test your favourite openings, and see for yourself how it handles the cube.
If you enjoy the challenge, PRO keeps Master unlocked permanently, together with all other PRO benefits.
How to Train Against Master: 6 Practical Tips
1. Climb the ladder. Start at Expert, then move to Ultra. When you can hold your own there, step up to Master. Losing a lot at first is normal; it is a sign that you are playing against something much stronger.
2. Use hints to learn, not to win. When a position confuses you, ask for a hint and try to understand why the suggested move is better than the one you had in mind.
3. Study the doubling cube. Pay attention to when Master offers a double and when it passes. Cube decisions often decide more points than checker play.
4. Focus on one skill per session. One evening on priming games, another on the bear-off, another on back games. Short, focused practice improves your game faster than random play.
5. Play longer series. One game says little because of the dice. Play several games in a row and judge your progress over the whole series.
6. Learn the openings. Since Master plays the classic opening moves, copying its first moves is a great way to build a strong opening repertoire of your own.
Take the Challenge
Master is available now in Clean Backgammon 1.9.5 for Android. Update the app, pick your level and see how far up the ladder you can go.
