Local Wi-Fi vs Pass & Play: Which Multiplayer Mode Should You Choose?
Key Takeaways
  • Pass & Play turns a single smartphone or tablet into a digital wooden backgammon board.
  • Local Wi-Fi lets two players use their own devices over a local router or mobile hotspot without internet.
  • Both local modes consume zero mobile cellular data and require no account logins.
  • Pass & Play is ideal for flights and cafes; Local Wi-Fi is perfect for comfortable home and office matches.

Choosing Your Local Game Mode

Clean Backgammon is built to bring people together in person. By tapping "SELECT MODE" on the main lobby, you have immediate access to two dedicated offline multiplayer experiences:

1. "Play 2 Players" (Pass & Play): Designed for two players sharing a single device.

2. "Local Wi-Fi": Designed for two players on separate devices connected to the same local network.

Pass & Play: The Ultimate Single-Device Hotseat Experience

Pass & Play eliminates the need to carry a bulky physical backgammon set. Place your phone or tablet on the table between you and your friend. When Player 1 finishes their moves, the turn indicator signals Player 2 to roll.

Because the board layout is symmetrical, you can play comfortably either side-by-side or facing each other. Zero internet connection or Wi-Fi is needed, making it ideal for road trips, flights, and remote vacations.

Local Wi-Fi: Private Dual-Device Play Without Internet

Local Wi-Fi allows two players in the same room to compete on their own individual screens. One player hosts a room, and the second player’s device automatically discovers it via local network broadcast.

Crucially, Local Wi-Fi does NOT require active internet connectivity. A local Wi-Fi router or even a portable smartphone mobile hotspot with data turned off is fully sufficient.
